The Badlands series:

ARC of Clockwork Mafia provided by NetGalley for an honest review

And honest this review shall be! The Badlands series left me a little neutral after reading it and basically that was the main reason why I have waited so long to write a review. I didn’t want to write it with a hot head, only to found out I would probably end up not being entirely fair with the author.

After a month of waiting, I can say that the Badlands haven’t really left my mind entirely, mostly due to the huge world build potential. Although it’s not mind blown, it goes great along with the plot line and it doesn’t overwhelm it.
What felt flat on both novels were the characters and plot line.

Although in Badlands, main char Eve is everything you want in a character (bold, brave and with a hint of psychopath), the romance feels too weird and weak. Unlike Clockwork Mafia, where the romance feels a little more real, in Badland we don’t really understand how or for which reason the romance happened. Was there any need for romance in these two books? Couldn’t it simple be two simple adventures with both strong females with the lead role?

Henriqueta is a lot more feminine than Eve. Eve is wild, she is dangerous and you love her that way, but when romance starts forming she loses that vibrant touch.
Both plot also lacked in plot twists, in the end it all felt very flat and easy.

Nevertheless, the Badland series are a good series for a simple and effective steampunk world build (plus, the covers are awesome!)

Short synopsis of Badlands:

When an airship attacks and kills the monarch, Ever must infiltrate enemy territory to bring home the heir to the throne, and the dirigible Dark Hawk is her fastest way to the Union.
Captain Spencer Pierce just wants to pay off the debt he owes on the Dark Hawk and make a life for himself trading across the border. When the queen’s assassination puts the shipping routes at risk, he finds himself Ever’s reluctant ally.

Short synopsis of Clockwork Mafia:

Inventor Henrietta Mason is retiring from airships and adventuring to return home to Philadelphia. Determined to erase all trails leading to her late father’s duplicity, she dismantles his lab and removes all records of the Badlands gold.

His career and vengeance on the line, Carson Alexander must prove a connection between Senator Mason and the mafia. He lucked out happening across Mason’s strikingly beautiful daughter, only to have her slip through his fingers. On a desperate hunt to track her down, he never expects his search to take him into the brutal Badlands.

With a mechanically enhanced enforcer after them, only Carson knows the extent of the danger they face. He’ll have to win over Henrietta’s trust, and her heart, before it’s too late…
